  • Mankulam

    Mankulam is a village in Idukki district of Kerala. This is the first Grama Panchayat in Kerala which produces electricity their own and sells it to the Electricity board of Kerala. Mankulam, near Munnar, is nestled between the Malayattoor forestry, Rajamalai hills and the extensive area of ​​tea plantations. Wild elephants appear from the thick woods to take a drink in the streams here and a visitor can immerse in the sights of various attractive waterfalls. Wrapped by mist, the pristine spot of Mankulam is located on the western side of Munnar and is surrounded by mountains.     The unspoken feel of beauty and tranquility together meet at a forest locked village called Aanakulam. This appealing place is located nearly 40 km away from Munnar. Elephants wander here in large social groups in human-occupied areas, which is something unique about this picturesque spot. Two streams of Periyaar, namely, Idacholayaar and Nallatanniyaar drizzles and nourishes this land.

    Everyone can enjoy elephant masses within a distance of 50 meters. The herd groups include young elephants and the huge tuskers. A nice walk through the forest and a cool bath in the Idacholayaar cleanse one's mind.
    This forest area is rich with its wildlife resources including gaur, wild boar, peacock, deer, etc. Generally, they never descend from the forest but could be easily sketched on the way to Aanakulam. Nature has gifted Aanakulam with the Nallatanniyaar which same time wets and beautifies the place. Breathtakingly amazing waterfalls, streams, and enjoyment in these waters refresh all nature lovers.     Tribal interaction
    The forest area in Mankulam is home to four tribes, who leave the forest only once every month to buy rice and other essential items. Mainly their settlements are at Kozhiyala, Mangappara, Edamala, and Uriyambatti. Numerous tribal families have settled in Edamalakudy also. However, tourists are not allowed to visit the villages of the tribal folk.
